Registrations double as eInvoicing becomes mainstream

More than 110,000 New Zealand businesses are now registered to receive eInvoices, a major milestone for the country’s move to smarter, safer and more efficient invoicing.

On 8 July, Hon Cameron Brewer, Minister of Small Business and Manufacturing announced eInvoicing registrations have more than doubled in the past year. The volume of eInvoices exchanged is also rising quickly, with nearly 1 million eInvoices exchanged to date, compared with 260,000 a year ago highlighting that uptake is translating into real use.
Confidence boost
This milestone comes alongside new research by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research which estimates eInvoicing could deliver $800 million in annual productivity gains.
New research highlights $800 million in annual productivity gains
It is one of the simplest, proven productivity gains available to New Zealand businesses today. Those with cloud accounting (around 370,000 businesses) have eInvoicing available to them now.
Reaching the 110,000 milestone means that around one third of the ‘addressable market’ is now set up and ready to exchange eInvoices with their trading partners.
"For small businesses, cash is king. Late payments choke cashflow, and that's exactly what this fixes. eInvoicing helps you get paid faster, cuts the admin, and reduces invoice fraud and scams," Hon Cameron Brewer, Minister of Small Business and Manufacturing says.
This growing network of users is a strong signal that eInvoicing is no longer an emerging option used by a small number of organisations, it is becoming the normal way for businesses to transact in New Zealand.
Momentum step-change
Momentum is expected to continue as government agencies and large organisations expand their use of eInvoicing. From 1 January 2027, agencies must require their large suppliers to send eInvoices, further encouraging adoption across supply chains.
For small businesses using cloud accounting software, getting set up for eInvoicing can be simple and cost-free. Businesses can check if their trading partners can receive eInvoices and learn how to get started on the eInvoicing website.
eInvoicing allows businesses to send and receive invoices directly between accounting software systems without printing, emailing, or creating PDFs.
